Day 9: Getting the point

Yesterday and tonight was all about 1 point perspective again. I thought I'd try to be a bit more ambitious than previous attempts and do a cityscape.

I scribbled around for an hour trying to add as many shapes (curves, triangle, trapeziums) into it to make it more interesting than just a lot of "blocks" and thought I'd add in a monorail type thing as a vanishing point gimmick.

First I outlined what I wanted with a 2H pencil. You can just about make out the lines in the photo. It was very light but really easy to erase.

I hadn't added in all the buildings yet but I fleshed it out before i started lining it in. I started with the monorail and the trains. I seem to remember an art teacher telling me to always start in the middle...

Once they were in I started working my way out....

This is where I left it on Day 8. Tonight when I sat down in front of it I got the feeling it was starting to look too straight and I felt I was cheating a bit ruling all the lines in so I finished the lines free hand with a mechanical pencil and shaded some bits with a 3B.

I took it as far as I wanted to go and then as an afterthought decided to practice a cross-hatching technique I'd been reading about. Once I'd had enough this was the result.

I wont be taking this one any further. It served it purpose. Tomorrow I'll be back to 2-point perspective again.

I'll also maybe talk about what I'm using to draw with.
