I did something yesterday that I have never done before in my life. I completed a sketchbook. Yep, an entire pad used up in the first month of this project! So starting a new one today with better quality paper.

If you didn’t get the clue in the title the theme today is trees.

In the months ahead I hope to be getting into more realistic trees drawn from life but one step at a time - here’s the simplistic cartoony 3D style.

(Note the cube that appears in most of My drawings. This is to keep things in the perspective used and gives me a line reference for the NW/SE NE/SW directions)

You can see by looking at the roots how the cube works.

From here I drew in the leafy areas and the cast shadow on their boughs, added some wood texture and suggested grass around the roots.

Then i added shadows to the trunk and roots and textured the bark.

From there I added deeper shadows to the boughs and shaded the edges of the leafy areas.

And finally i used textured shading to give the leafy areas form.
